    City Walls in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Gunduliceva poljana 2

    Ticket price: 35 euros for adults, young (up to 18 years) 15 euros. The ticket is valid for the whole day and the price includes the ticket to the Lovrijenac fortress.
    Working hours: 08 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the summer, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the winter. It is open every day in a week.

    Dubrovnik is surrounded by City Walls which are almost 2 kilometres long (1940 m) and for which it is famous all around the world. Through the history City Walls served as protection from the enemy, today Dubrovnik City Walls brings the visitors from all over the world to see this city- museum.

    There are 3 entrances to the City Walls: on Stradun by the Pile Gate, by Saint John's fort and at the Custom's House gate.

     
     

    Within the City Walls you will see Fort Minceta and St. John's fort on the south-eastern side. Also, within the City Walls are Fort Lawrence at Pile and Fort Revelin at Ploce. The main entrance to the City Walls is by the Inner Pile Gates.

    During the summer the best is to avoid visiting City Walls between 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. because of the high heat. Except the amazing view to the whole Dubrovnik. In price is also included sightseeing of some forts and towers inside the walls:

     
     

    Minceta Fort is one of the most beautiful cultural attractions in Dubrovnik. It is situated on the northwest side of the city inside the City Walls. It was built according to the design of Renaissance builder Juraj Dalmatinac.

     
     

    St. Luke's Tower

    you can see walking along the landward side of City Walls up to Ploce Gate. St. Luke’s Tower through the history protected the entrance to the Dubrovnik harbour.

     
     

    St. John's Fort

    was constructed in 16th century and it is really worth visiting - on its ground floor you can visit the Aquarium, and on first and second floor you can visit Maritime Museum. (more about it at the end of the page).

     
     

    Fort Bokar

    is situated on the seaward of City Walls. It was designed by Florentine architect Michelozzi in the 15th century.

     
     

    Fort Lawrence in Dubrovnik, district Pile

    It is situated outside the City Walls. It was built to protect the city from the Venetian fleet and to protect the western sea access to the city. Today this fort is very popular because during the summer a large number of plays have been performed here within the Dubrovnik Summer Festival program, and one of the most popular plays is Shakespeare's - Hamlet.

     
     

    Revelin fort in the Old Town - Dubrovnik

    Revelin fort is situated outside the City Walls and through the history it protected the entrance to Dubrovnik harbour. It was built in the 16th century. On beautiful terraces of this fort a large number of plays have been performed within the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and during the winter inside the fort Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra organizes concerts and hosts numerous visitors. Revelin fort can be seen from outside, inside fort you can see only during some event.

     
     

    Lazareti in Dubrovnik at the entrance to the Old Town - Dubrovnik

     

    Lazareti are situated on the east side of the entrance to the Old Town from Ploce. Through the history Ploce were the meeting place of the merchant’s caravans and travelers from the Ottoman Empire. That is why the Old Dubrovnik people built there quarantine for the purpose of isolating the travelers and goods from the eastern countries, where the outbreaks of contagious diseases were frequent. Today, Lazareti are the place where are being organized lots of cultural and entertainment events.

    The Rector's Palace was administrative centre of the Dubrovnik Republic. Today in Rector's Palace is situated Cultural- historic museum which represents the way of life in Dubrovnik through the history. There you can see old coins, collection of arms and utensils antique furniture, paintings ... On the ground floor you can see courtroom, prison and administration office. Rector's Palace today is a place which houses many concerts in it's amazing atmosphere. Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra also has it's concerts there during the summer.

     
     

    Sponza Palace in the Old Town - Dubrovnik

    Sponza Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces in the city of Dubrovnik. It was built in the 16th century and by its beauty and richness it testifies the culture and richness of old Dubrovnik people. Sponza Palace was the commercial centre of the City. At the end of 16th century it became a cultural centre of Dubrovnik Republic. Today it houses the Dubrovnik Archives which is one of the richest in Europe. Lots of manifestations are being organized inside or in front of Sponza Palace. Opening of Dubrovnik Summer Festival happens in front of it every year on July 10th.

     
     

    Dubrovnik Cathedral and the Cathedral Treasury in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Drziceva poljana

    Ticket price: the entrance to the cathedral is free; you can enter any day except during the mass.
    Ticket price for entrance to the Treasury is cca 2 euros per person.
    Working hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday and holiday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the summer, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3p.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday and holiday from 11 a.m.during the winter. It is opened every day.

    It was built at the end of 17th century/ beginning of 18th century. In Dubrovnik Cathedral you can see great collection of paintings and relics. In the Cathedral Treasury you can see 132 relics of Saints dating from 11th to 19th centuries. You can also see relics of head, arms and leg of Saint Blaise which were made by Dubrovnik goldsmiths.

     
     

    The Church of Saint Blaise in the Old Town - Dubrovnik

    Ticket price: the entrance to the church is free; you can enter any day except during the mass.

    This most famous Dubrovnik church is dedicated to Dubrovnik's protector - St. Blaise (Vlaho). On the main altar you can see gilded silver statue of Saint Blaise holding a model of the City in his hand. The church was built in period 1706.-1714. Every year in front of this church it is organize Festivity of Saint Blaise on February 3rd.

     
     

    Franciscan monastery in the Old Town - Dubrovnik with the oldest pharmacy in Europe (1317.) and Franciscan monastery museum ''Mala Braca'', Placa 2

    Working hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the winter, opened every day.

    Franciscan monastery was built in 14th century. Today visitors from the whole world enjoy in valuable paintings, music archive, famous library, various art works in gold and silver. Also you can visit the oldest pharmacy in Europe (1317.) which is situated in Franciscan monastery. In museum you can enjoy in unique view - you can see instrument for distilling water from 14th century, prescription manuscripts for making medicine, precise measurement ...

     
     

    The Synagogue

    The Synagogue in Dubrovnik is one of the oldest in Europe and was built in 1652. Jews started to populate Dubrovnik in 1546. when a decree made by the government of Dubrovnik Republic allowed them to. In Synagogue today you can see many relics, archive documents and Torah which dates from 13th to the 17th centuries. The Dubrovnik Jews Community, beside the Synagogue, in Dubrovnik has also small Jewish fountain at Pile and its own cemetery by Dubrovnik main cemetery Boninovo.

     
     

    Orthodox Church of Annunciation in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Od Puca 8

    Ronald Brown memorial house in the Old Town - Dubrovnik

    Memorial house was opened because of tragic death of America's trade Minister Ronald Brown and his associates in 1996. in the vicinity of Dubrovnik. In that memorial house are constantly exposed paintings of three major Dubrovnik artists in 20th century: Antun Masle, Duro Pultika and Ivo Dulcic.

    Marin Drzic was greatest Croatian Renaissance comedies from Dubrovnik. Visiting his house will return you to some historic time. Year 2008. was the year of Marin Drzic.

     
     

    The Ethnographic Museum Rupe, Old Town - Dubrovnik, Od Rupa 3

    For all those who are interested in the way of life in old Dubrovnik this museum is definitely right choice. It is located in old granary and will show you how much attention the residents of Dubrovnik gave to the storage of grain. The Dubrovnik Republic kept all the state reserves of wheat, barley and millet in deep silos called Rupe, carved out of stone and coated with a water-proof material that kept the grain at a temperature of 17ºC. In Ethnographic Museum Rupe you can see the traditional rural economy and architecture and folk costumes and textile handiwork.

    Maritime Museum is located in St. John's fort. Here you can see many exhibits which testify about history and development of Dubrovnik trade and navigation.

    Aquarium is located in St. John's Fort and it consists of 27 pools in which you can see many various fish, sponges, anemones, corals, starfish. There is also one very special resident there- a sea horse, the aquarium trademark.

     
     

    Orlando's Column in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Stradun

    Orlando's Column is one of the most beautiful cultural attractions in Dubrovnik. It was built in 15th century and for 6 centuries in symbol of Dubrovnik's freedom and independency. Orlando's column is in fact figure of warrior in armor. According to legend, that is the knight Orlando who protected Dubrovnik from the attack of Saraceni and defeated them near Lokrum. Through the history Orlando's column was the symbol of Dubrovnik trade. His elbow is 51,20 cm long and because of its elbow in Dubrovnik there is an expression ''Gold elbow''.

     
     

    The large Onofrio's Fountain in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Stradun

    On the entrance to the Old Town from Pile gate you cannot miss the beautiful Large Onofrio's fountain. It was designed in 15th century by Onofrio della Cava and it was a symbol of the completion of the City water supply which brought water to Dubrovnik from Rijeka Dubrovacka (12 km far). Today this fountain is beautiful and famous Dubrovnik attraction, but it was really damaged in the earthquake in 1667. The fountain is favourite meeting place of young people and tourists who want to have rest and some refreshment in hot summer days in Dubrovnik.

     
     

    Small Onofrio's Fountain in the Old Town - Dubrovnik, Stradun

    Another beautiful fountain from the 15th century decorates Dubrovnik main street- Stradun. This small Onofrio's Fountain was also designed by Onofrio della Cava. It is very special because of it's relieves of nude baby - boys, the dolphins with shells, the maskerons and the kneeling boys on the water pool. Today the small Onofrio's Fountain is a part of original setting for Marin Drzic's play ''Novela od Stanca“.

     
     

    The City Bell Tower in the Old Town - Dubrovnik

    Just above the entrance to the Old Town from Ploce you will see the city bell tower with a watch built in 1444. There are also two figures made in bronze, 2 exactly the same figures. They strike the hours with their hammers and they are known as famous Dubrovnik twins ''Maro and Baro''. They are also called Zelenci. Today their originals you can see at Sponza Palace, and city bell tower you can see from Stradun.
